What is a Steubenville youth conference? Steubenville is a town in Ohio. Franciscan University is in Steubenville and there are many conferences on campus throughout the year. The youth conferences have been happening at the University since 1975. The first off campus youth conference was held in Alexandria, Louisiana in 1995. There are now youth conferences in Atlanta, Denver, Minneapolis, Attleboro, Tucson, St. Louis, Alexandria, San Diego, and Steubenville. This will be the fourth year for a Steubenville conference in the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux. Who is the Bishop of Houma Thibodaux diocese? Bishop Sam Jacobs. Why should a young person attend a Steubenville youth conference? The whole vision for the conference is to lead teens to Christ and to give them a deeper understanding and love for their Catholic Faith. How much does the conference cost, and when do we pay? $140.00 is the total cost per person ($120 for participants of groups within the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux). A registration deposit of $40 per person is due by: March 10, 2009. The final payment is due by April 28, 2009. Deposit and final payments should be made by the Group Leader in the form of one check or credit card payment accompanied by a copy of the Group Registration Form. All registrations will be online. Can I send my youth alone? In order to provide the best possible context for fellowship, sharing, ministry, and supervision, the youth conferences handle registration by groups only. No individual registrations will be accepted. What are the criteria for youth, group leader, and chaperone? Group Leader: the adult responsible for organizing your trip and serving as the main contact for your group. Written and oral correspondence takes place between the Group Leader and the conference office. The Group Leader must be attending the conference and will be responsible for the entire group. Adult Chaperone: young adult, age 21+, attending to chaperone the youth. For the safety of the youth and to foster productive small group times, the ratio of youth to adult is 1 adult per 10 youth in your group. We ask that your group not exceed the maximum adult to youth ratio.
*This weekend is challenging physically and spiritually. It is a time of deep ministry and small group time. We recommend chaperones feel comfortable directing, sharing, and praying with youth.
* Please refer to the group leader?s manual for further information.
Youth: youth participants attending the conference must be entering 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grades in the Fall of 2009 or be a 2008 high school graduate. Where will we stay? Group Leaders are responsible for making all housing arrangements for the group. Off-Site and On- Site Housing is available. Off-Site Housing refers to local hotels and dorm housing on Nicholls State University campus (http://www.nicholls.edu/cnc/Y_steubenville.htm). On-Site Housing is limited and refers to the housing in local schools. On-Site Housing is $5 per person for the weekend and is available on a first-come-first serve basis as the Housing Registration Form and payment is received. (Please refer to Housing Information Sheet in the Group Registration Packet). What will the weather be like? Louisiana can be very hot in June. Even though the conference area is air conditioned, please advise your group to drink plenty of water, get regular sleep and eat all meals while at the conference. |
Greetings in Christ! We are pleased to announce that for summer 2009 the theme for the Franciscan University High School Youth Conferences will be: ABOVE ALL! The scripture that will guide the programming is: “Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty; for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours; yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as headaboveall.” 1 Chronicles 29:11 We live in the age of super-sizing. Everyone speaks of living large, getting the most out of the moment, and seizing the day. But in teen culture, this philosophy has led to a frantic, fragmented approach to life where the driving force of existence is stringing together one experience after another in hopes of finding happiness. Teens are constantly driven to look for the next big thing, the higher “high” or the greater thrill. But often, there is no real consideration or contemplation for the purpose or meaning of their lives. Life becomes empty and is reduced to nothing. In turn, God is reduced to nothing with teens not really knowing who God is or what to believe. But God is bigger. God is the ultimate. God is truly ABOVE ALL and he reigns as King of the Universe. His heart burns with a passionate, unconditional love for eachof us. It is this love that changes hearts, sets people free, and draws us into deeper communion with the one who made. Jesus says in John 10:10, “I have come that they may have life and have it abundantly.” This “real life” is discovered only when we take our eyes off of ourselves, the world, its false pleasures, its half-truths and give our hearts completely to the Living God. In 2009, we will be calling young people to tear down the facade the world has thrown up in front of them. We will draw them into the presence of the God of the Universe where they will see that God truly is ABOVE ALL, better than anything else and living in their hearts through faith and Baptism. We want to show them that God is not an experience but a journey. He is their beginning, He is their end. And He is in all, through all and with all of them as they journey through this life. And we want to call young people to make Christ King of their hearts – where He can reign ABOVE ALL! I hope to see you at one of the 19 different youth conferences across the U.S. and Canada this summer! God bless you! John Beaulieu Director of Youth Outreach |
